A Tribute To Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald

The Syncopators with special guest Yvette Johansson | Pre-show entertainment by Imogen Brough

Due to the announcement regarding the 5 day ‘circuit breaker’ lock down (11.59pm Friday 12 February - 11.59pm Wednesday 17 February 2021) this show has been cancelled.

Ticket holders for this show will be emailed with a confirmation of cancelation. Refunds will be processed automatically – you do not need to contact Geelong Arts Centre for these refunds to occur.

The concert will start at the roots of jazz with its most influential figure, Louis Armstrong, as he was creating and shaping America’s new art form in the 20’s. It will progress through his big band era of the 30’s to his mature style and the famous vocal duets he created with America’s First Lady of Song - the fabulous Ella Fitzgerald.

Who better to present this in Australia than one of its premier jazz/swing groups – ‘The Syncopators’, no strangers to Geelong Arts Centre with highly acclaimed concerts including ‘Tribute to Bing Crosby’ and ‘Best of British’. They will team up with the vocal skills and musicality of Australia’s foremost ‘Ella’ exponent - Yvette Johansson - to create a delightful program that is sure to be both entertaining and exhilarating.

The group, with eighteen European concert tours, one LP and seventeen CDs under its belt, is recognised by critics and peers alike as amongst the very best in Australia.

Society Syncopators, now called “The Syncopators” was founded in 1984 by trombonist Chris Ludowyk, originally from Geelong, and has performed at most major Jazz and Performing Arts Festivals in Australia and some of the most prestigious International Jazz festivals.

It has featured in two movies, on live TV concerts and entertained at countless corporate functions over its 36 year existence. The group has also represented Australia on many overseas ‘Cultural Relations’ tours for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including the South Pacific Islands in the late’80s and early ‘90s, Germany in 1995 and Mongolia in 2017.

Some recent highlights include performances at the Breda (Netherlands), Dresden (Germany) and Ascona (Switzerland) International Jazz Festivals; shortlisted finalists in the Bell Awards 2005 and 2007 and recent winners for the “Best Australian Classic Jazz Recording of the Year”.
