GEELONG ARTS CENTRE'S CREATIVE ENGINE
GEELONG SWEATS
Geelong Arts Centre’s Creative Engine presents Geelong Sweats, a physical theatre project about Waterworld Leisure Centre starring its very own inimitable personalities.
“Go hard or go home! / 100% or nothing. / I’m just here for a laugh. / It’s a balance between gas bagging and working out. / This is like medicine. / Get up, dress up, show up, but never give up.” - Waterworld gymgoers
Co-created and performed by gym enthusiasts from Waterworld Leisure Centre, Geelong Sweats brings together some of the strongest, most charismatic and diehard personalities of Geelong’s iconic fitness facility.
The creative development of this socially-engaged physical theatre project was assisted by Geelong Arts Centre’s Creative Engine for its potential to unearth surprising local stories to new audiences. More than just a show or product, its appeal lies in the artists’ deep engagement and genuine collaboration with community.
Geelong Sweats explores the role of physical activity in our lives, scrutinises fads in training and health regimes, and embraces our diverse and changing bodies over time. It challenges mainstream perceptions of gym culture and entrenched socioeconomic stereotypes of the Norlane area.
In this joyous, physical and inspirational theatre performance, Waterworld gymgoers share stories of transformation, fitness and changing bodies while working out non-stop… almost.
While bringing into focus the lives of a specific group of people, the project is an attempt at capturing Geelong at a time of change. Geelong Sweats brings to the forefront diverse views on current topics and trends specific to our regional city at this pivotal moment in its history.
WHAT TO EXPECT
This creative development features opportunities for voluntary audience participation.
Come along to watch Waterworld gymgoers get up, dress up, show up and share a burst of fitness, disco and inspo.
