MEDIA RELEASE • 12 DECEMBER 2022
Proudly supported by Major Artistic Partner, Deakin University, Geelong Arts Centre’s Family Magic program returns in 2023 with a diverse range of heartwarming, family-friendly productions.
Consisting of five captivating creative performances, as well as school holiday fun, the Family Magic program facilitates growth by sparking a lifelong love of the arts for children and families.
Sometimes fantastical and funny, and always engaging, Family Magic 2023 invites families from across the G21 region to immerse themselves in the magic of the performing arts, and guarantees they’ll leave the theatre with sore cheeks and full hearts.
These dynamic muti-arts experiences seek to welcome, inspire and entertain children under 12, as well as their parents, siblings, grandparents and carers.
Running from January through to August, the exuberant 2023 program consists of five diverse musical and theatrical experiences.
Welcoming a new line up of cheeky characters, emotive explorations and interactive opportunities, Family Magic 2023 delves into important themes of culture, identity and community through theatrical storytelling, music, performance and dance.
From 19-20 January, Fat Fruit and Performing Lines present The Rainbow Tree; a heart-warming performance for children 4-8, fusing musical storytelling with moving image, crafted in collaboration with children from Rainbow Families.
Then on 4 March, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra provides the perfect opportunity to introduce babies and toddlers to the magic of music with Jams for Juniors: Grieg’s Peer Gynt.
In April and June, childhood favourites will go from page to stage!
Come 1 April, children aged 6+are invited on a theatrical journey of smelly scenarios and unlikely friendship with CDP Kids Production Mr Stink, based on David Walliams’ award-winning picture book.
Then on 17 June, the Australian Chamber Orchestra will enchant children aged 2-8 with a whimsical, intergenerational reimagining of Mem Fox and Julie Vivas’ beloved Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge.
Plus, on 26 August, Windmill Theatre Company present HICCUP; a hilarious rocking musical extravaganza for children aged 4-8 about working together, finding friendship and how to, once and for all, stop the hiccups.
For many children in the G21 region, the Family Magic program marks their very first theatrical experience, and Geelong Arts Centre takes great pride in helping families spark a love for the arts that introduces their little ones to a world of limitless possibilities.
Geelong Arts Centre’s Family Magic 2023 program is proudly supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria, and Major Artistic Partner, Deakin University.
