MEDIA RELEASE • 16 DECEMBER 2020

Victorian Government investment in the Geelong Arts Centre Little Malop St. Redevelopment is laying the foundations for local economic recovery.

The project has commenced ahead of schedule with early works and is delivering jobs for the community and supporting local suppliers at the time it is needed most.

Managing contractor Lendlease is implementing its ‘Geelong First’ commitment that prioritises investment in Geelong businesses, supporting local jobs, focussing on skills and innovation, and providing social value through employment opportunities.

The Redevelopment is already providing a timely boost to the local economy with eight tender packages awarded to Geelong area businesses to date employing 44 people on the project.

Eight other Victorian companies involved with the project have committed to employ Geelong residents and engage with local suppliers. Ten suppliers and subcontractors have also committed to hiring at least one apprentice.

Overall, the redevelopment will boost the local economy by generating more than 600 local jobs during construction.

On site work has begun with the demolition of the old Barwon Health building and the removal of interiors and fittings inside the centre. Hoardings and safe access routes are in place around the site and care is being taken to minimise disruptions to nearby businesses.

Through this process the project team has donated more than 15 tonnes of salvaged items and materials to local community organisations.

Items include white-good appliances, furniture, kitchen benches, and other materials such as the large roll of red carpet donated to Herne Hill Primary for their Grade 6 Graduation Ceremony.

Early works will be complete in mid-2021 with project completion expected in 2023.
