Geelong Arts Centre welcomes a vibrant and heartfelt adaptation of Looking for Alibrandi to The Story House stage from 20 to 23 August, in one of the most anticipated productions of the season.
Adapted by AWGIE-nominated writer Vidya Rajan (Deadloch, The Feed Comedy) from Melina Marchetta’s beloved novel, presented by Brink Productions, the stage interpretation reimagines the iconic story for a contemporary audience while honouring its enduring themes of self-discovery, culture, and acceptance.
Celebrating 25 years since the premiere of the cult classic film, the production is directed by Stephen Nicolazzo (Loaded, Merciless Gods) and stars Chanella Macri (Barking Gecko, Whale) in the role of Josie Alibrandi—a character whose honesty and humour continue to resonate with audiences across generations.
Looking for Alibrandi follows Josie, as she balances school, relationships, and the pressures of her strict Nonna and idealistic mother. While trying to navigate life in 1990s Sydney, Josie begins to uncover deep truths about her family's past, her cultural identity, and the social expectations set around her.
Following seasons at Malthouse Theatre and Belvoir St Theatre, which drew standing ovations and rave reviews from both critics and audiences, the Geelong run promises to be just as unforgettable.
Whether you're revisiting a high school favourite or discovering Josie’s story for the first time, Looking for Alibrandi delivers a moving and relatable experience. So, grab your friends, book a table at one of the city’s bustling Italian restaurants and settle in for a night of culture, chaos and cannoli.
Looking for Alibrandi will be at Geelong Arts Centre from 20 to 23 August 2025. Tickets are available at geelongartscentre.org.au
Geelong Arts Centre’s Season 2025 is proudly supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria and Major Artistic Partner Deakin University.
