MEDIA RELEASE • 18 SEPTEMBER 2023

From October 5 to 7, Bell Shakespeare hits Geelong Arts Centre with William Shakespeare’s quintessential tale, Twelfth Night, with a fresh twist.

Directed by Heather Fairbairn, Twelfth Night is set to retell the classic comedy with a new spin as the cast tangle their way through a web of romance, misunderstanding and mistaken identities.

Featuring all-new music by Sarah Blasko, Twelfth Night embraces ambiguity around time and place to deliver a deep exploration of gender and sexuality that acknowledges both light and darkness.

The gender-bending performance is poised to delight both classic and contemporary theatre lovers in a new world of rich imagery, language, laughter and poetry. A collision of hidden identities and unrequited love, this tale pairs heavy themes with buoyancy, optimism and hope.

Bell Shakespeare is Australia’s national theatre company specialising in the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Focused on inspiring and engaging audiences by bringing Shakespeare’s classic works to life through innovative and artistically excellent productions, Bell Shakespeare harnesses modern perspectives on timeless truths.

Twelfth Night promises an unforgettable theatre experience that combines Shakespearean wit with contemporary flair. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness the magic of live theatre at Geelong Arts Centre’s brand new space for immersive storytelling, The Story House.

This performance runs for 150 minutes, including a 20 minute interval.
