FOREIGNER
Amelia Vu
'Foreigner' is a short dance film existing to share the feelings of unfamiliarity in a land that is not their own. A dancer is set in places that are rigidly different in every shot. What will challenge audiences is seeing the expression of dance movement that are in response to these places. The thoughtful yet improvised dance piece is in response to their surrounding environment; environment = sound, space, structure, the people surrounding it, the feeling of it.
The cinematic capture of dance movement will be accompanied by sounds that are from the environments, and with the voice of a young poet narrating a number of Haikus (which is a traditional form of poetry originated in Japan). The poetry will follow themes of unfamiliarity and an 'out-of-place' feeling, which are themes that resonate with the artists involved in this film: living life as an immigrant and growing up as an Asian in Australia. The goal is to explore how to not make these themes explicitly told, but to embody them in a poetic matter where all audiences can resonate to the words and movement being expressed.
