Formed in 1990, Arte Kanela Flamenco is widely acclaimed as the unsurpassed and most exciting force in the Australian Flamenco music scene.
At the core of Arte Kanela are the exceptionally gifted Tedesco brothers: Musical Director, Guitarist and Composer Richard, who ensures the music continues to develop innovatively and creatively whilst firmly rooted in traditional structures; and Principal Dancer and Choreographer Johnny, who captures the skill and raw authenticity in his execution of the dance. What began with young friendships and musical bonds in the backstreets of Melbourne’s Spanish quarter, Fitzroy, has matured, strengthened and evolved, over two decades into an institutional band. Together with the striking dance of Chantelle Cano and emerging drummer and percussionist Joe Batrouney, Arte Kanela unfailingly and consistently bring to the stage a dynamic and high quality performance.
Arte Kanela Flamenco have collaborated with an impressive array of both local and international artists, including Kate Ceberano, The Cat Empire, and Puerto Flamenco, and have featured on some of Australia’s highest rated television programs, including Dancing with the Stars, Getaway, Spicks and Specks, The Panel and Postcards. ARTE KANELA were also protagonists in “El Toque de un Beso”, a short film directed and produced by renowned Hollywood director Roger Spottiswoode (dir. 007- Tomorrow Never Dies).
Such appearances have earned the group national accolade, prominence and participation in the most prestigious world music festivals and events in Australia and New Zealand, including WOMADELAIDE and WOMAD New Zealand 2009 and 2015, Woodford Folk Festival QLD, Melbourne International Arts Festival VIC, Sydney Festival NSW, Taranaki International Arts Festival NZ, The Famous Spiegeltent, Mullum Music Festival NSW, Port Fairy Folk Festival VIC, Erupt Lake Taupo Festival NZ, Bellingen Festival NSW, FolkWorld Fairbridge Festival WA, Get Off Your Arts Festival NSW, and Victorian Arts Regional Tour. They have also been invited to perform numerous times at the Melbourne Arts Centre, the Cairns Tanks Arts Centre, and the Melbourne Recital Centre. Furthermore, Arte Kanela joined The Cat Empire on their Australian Tour, with performances at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and Sydney Centennial Park. This crossover into mainstream music audiences demonstrates the strength, presence and versatility of Arte Kanela’s music to transcend cultural and musical boundaries.
Arte Kanela Flamenco offer a new perspective to a conventional art form. The contemporary sound, look and feel of each presentation, whilst retaining the essence of Flamenco, ensures an experience packed with extraordinary virtuosity, an emotionally charged execution, and an intimate, visceral connection with the audience.
