Professional Learning with Deborah Cheetham Fraillon AO Bringing First Nations Cultures, Language and Storytelling to Life Through Music and Performance
Join acclaimed Yorta Yorta composer, soprano and educator Deborah Cheetham Fraillon AO for an inspiring professional development day exploring the innovative Cheeky Opera model. Developed by Deborah Cheetham Fraillon AO and Jess Hitchcock, Cheeky Opera is a cross-curricular arts resource that enables children to engage with First Nations culture, language, music and storytelling through the creation and performance of their own opera.
Designed for music and performing arts educators, this hands-on workshop will unpack the creative and educational principles behind Cheeky Opera and demonstrate how performance can become a powerful tool for cultural learning. Participants will explore practical approaches to integrating First Nations perspectives into their programs through singing, storytelling, movement, creative play and collaborative performance-making.
Drawing on the award-winning children's book Go Home, Cheeky Animals by Dion Beasley and Johanna Bell the How to Make a Cheeky Opera resource provides teachers with a valuable cross curricular project designed to assist in developing the confidence and skills to embed First Nations voices and experiences in authentic, engaging and age-appropriate ways.
Throughout the day, Deborah will share insights into culturally responsive arts practice, including approaches to working respectfully with language, story and community. Educators will leave with practical strategies, creative ideas and a deeper understanding of how music and performance can foster connection, creativity and cultural understanding in their classrooms.
Ideal for primary school music, drama and performing arts teachers, arts leaders and classroom educators seeking meaningful ways to integrate First Nations perspectives through the arts.
