Opera Australia July School Holiday Creative Intensive

Presented by Geelong Arts Centre and Opera Australia Education, Learning and Participation

This interactive holiday workshop, hosted by Geelong Arts Centre in partnership with Opera Australia, invites young people to step into the powerful and expressive world of opera.

Over a two-day intensive, participants will dive into the story of La Bohème—a timeless tale of young love, friendship, and dreams set against the backdrop of bohemian life in 19th-century Paris.

Through song, music, and storytelling, you'll explore the world of opera and reimagine its characters and themes in your own unique way. Along the way, you’ll discover how La Bohème’s emotional core still resonates with our lives today.

What to expect?

  • Discover the basics of opera—how singing, voice types, music, and staging come together to tell powerful stories
  • Explore the characters, plot, emotional and cultural themes of La Bohème
  • Sing, write, and create your own original songs and scenes inspired by the opera
  • Reimagine popular songs to craft your very own bohemian-style opera, performed for friends and family at the end of the workshop
  • Meet the cast of Opera Australia’s La Bohème and get a behind-the-scenes look at the production at Geelong Arts Centre.
  • Present a short original theatre performance, shared with friends and family on the final day.

Places are extremely limited so get in early!
