Geelong Arts Centre is one of eleven Victorian State Government owned creative organisations under the umbrella of Creative Victoria. Since opening in 1981, Geelong Arts Centre has made significant artistic and cultural contributions to Geelong and the surrounding regions.

Geelong Arts Centre is currently undergoing a period of exciting and dynamic change. To meet the cultural needs of a growing population and help secure Geelong’s position as a global city, the Victorian State Government, through Creative Victoria, has committed funding for three stages of capital development. Stage One - the refurbishment of The Playhouse Theatre was completed in 2010. Stage Two - the Ryrie Street Redevelopment ($38.5m) was completed November 2019 and opened to the public on 7th November 2019. Stage Three - The Little Malop Street Redevelopment ($140m) commenced in 2019 and is planned for completion in 2023. This investment will result in a world-class arts facility becoming the cultural heart of Geelong and the G21 region.

About the role

This is a unique opportunity to join the Geelong Arts Centre team in the role of The Head Cleaner. This role will perform cleaning activities as well as supervise and manage a small team of cleaners to ensure the venue is maintained to an excellent standard, ensuring it provides a professional impression to all visitors, parents, patrons and staff.

The Head Cleaner will ensure that high standards of hygiene and cleanliness of buildings are maintained, assisting with day-to-day activities that maintain our facilities in a safe and functional order with excellent presentation.

The Head Cleaner will be responsible for overseeing the work activities of cleaners at the venues that Geelong Arts Centre manages, establishing cleaning schedules and assigning duties. This role will also be responsible for establishing cleaning standards and procedures for cleaners, maintaining and ordering cleaning supplies and equipment, monitoring the usage of cleaning chemicals and materials and ensuring that workplace health and safety measures are adhered to at all times.

Primary responsibilities

People and teams 

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement and overall success of the Cleaning team, its services, and functions.
  • Be an active member of the Cleaning team including attendance at team meetings and training.
  • Act in accordance with the Centre’s First Aid Management procedure and support members of the cleaning team as a mental health first aider.

Supervisory duties 

  • Liaise with the Facilities Manager and Facilities Administration Assistant on a daily basis regarding prioritisation of current tasks and assist in the planning of future tasks.
  • Ensure that all assigned duties are carried out and that resources are efficiently utilised.
  • Ensure that the Centre’s policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Maintain and control use of stock, equipment and consumables.
  • Maintain stock levels and purchase consumables, equipment and materials, as required.
  • Actively promote and monitor Health and Safety practices across the team, and report any incidents following the Centre’s procedures.
  • Ensure that all staff wear appropriate PPE and up-hold safety standards in their work and for themselves.
  • Ensure that cleaning staff are inducted and trained in cleaning procedures and expectations / standards of the Centre.
  • Prepare rosters for cleaning staff.
  • Ensure housekeeping standards are met and maintained in all facilities, address all shortcomings/faults.

Cleaning duties 

  • Vacuuming indoor and carpeted environments.
  • Cleaning uncarpeted indoor floor surfaces e.g. vinyl/timber/tiled floors including washing, mopping, sweeping, buffing, stripping and polishing.
  • Cleaning windows – internal and external, pictures, skirting, architraves, glass doors, cupboards and walls.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting bathroom areas i.e. cleaning floor surfaces, wiping surfaces of sinks, basins, toilets, pedestals, taps, urinals, mirrors, showers, baths.
  • Cleaning and sanitising handrails, desks, eating tables and chairs, doorknobs, taps, drinking fountains and sick bays.
  • Cleaning and maintaining equipment in safe operating condition.
  • Cleaning of lounge chairs and chairs in administration and reception areas.
  • Spot cleaning of spillages.
  • Cobweb and mildew control, utilising extendable equipment as necessary.
  • Cleaning of concrete, bitumen, asphalt and paved surfaces as and when required.
  • Disposal of rubbish and litter control including removal of material from drains and gutters between and/or surrounding buildings.
  • Dusting including student and office furniture, equipment and fans.
  • Hosing and pressure washing of concrete areas as and when required.
  • Removal of graffiti.
  • Waste removal - emptying classroom, staff room and office waste bins into rubbish bins placed around the venues.
  • Other appropriate cleaning duties as directed by the Facilities Manager or delegate/s.

Essential qualifications and experience

To be successful in this position, you will have:

  • Proficient technology skills, including Microsoft suite, time and attendance software, including familiarity with QR code end of shift reporting.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrable skills in leading and motivating a team.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Developing and managing staff rosters and cleaning schedules across the team. 

Desirable qualifications and experience

  • Recent cleaning experience in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of Material Safety Data Sheets, (MSDS), general OHS requirements for safe cleaning.
  • Experience working in an Arts and/or Government organisation or event cleaning.

Special requirements

  • Flexibility in working hours to support morning, evening, and weekend work will be required as part of the normal hours of duty for this position.
  • The following checks, licences and certifications are required as a condition of employment for this role:
  • Current and valid Working with Children’s Check (employee)
  • Completion of CHCCCS019 Recognise and respond to crisis situations, or equivalent, to perform as a mental health first aider primarily to the cleaning team. Training will be provided by Geelong Arts Centre.
