Overflow makes history in Geelong Arts Centre's SEASON 2024

25 Jan 2024

MEDIA RELEASE • 25 JANUARY 2024

From February 8 to 10, Geelong Arts Centre welcomes Darlinghurst Theatre Company to The Open House theatre with their exceptional performance of Overflow.

Written by internationally acclaimed writer and leading Trans voice Travis Alabanza (Burgerz), this explosive one-woman play shares a story of sisterhood and public toilets, inviting Trans experiences into the spotlight.

Making history as Australia’s first-ever theatre production crafted by an all-trans and gender-non-conforming cast and creative team, Overflow delivers a poignant yet humorous tour of women’s bathrooms; questioning who is allowed in and who is kept out.

Led by Proud Gunggari, Lardil and Kullilli Woman, Thea Raveneau (Rosie), this 70 minute performance engages with complex and vital conversations about the often overlooked place of Trans women in the feminist movement and wider society.

Cornered into a flooding toilet cubicle and determined not to be rescued again, Rosie distracts herself with memories of bathroom encounters. Drunken heart-to-hearts by dirty sinks, friendships forged in front of crowded mirrors, and hiding together from trouble.

Following a run of highly praised performances at Sydney Festival 2024 & Midsumma Festival at Arts Centre Melbourne, seize the opportunity to bare witness to a historic moment in Australian theatre as part of Geelong Arts Centre’s SEASON 2024 at Overflow.

Bookings can be made at geelongartscentre.org.au/whats-on/all-events/overflow/ , or by phoning the Box Office on 1300 251 200 between 9:00am and 5:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Geelong Arts Centre’s SEASON 2024 is proudly supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria, Major Artistic Partner, Deakin University, and Innovation Partner, Costa Asset Management.
