Roaring

Ignition | Creative Engine Grant Recipient 2022

Roaring is an immersive theatre experience where audiences are invited to explore 1920s Geelong. Using history as a mirror, and with a pretence of fun and frivolity, Roaring will delve into ideas of power, corruption, and untold female stories.

Bolstered by the team’s 10+ years experience in immersive and intimate theatre productions, Roaring is an exciting work made by and for the Geelong community.

Roaring is artistically inspired by grand-scale immersive works such as The Malthouse’s Because The Night and London’s A Drowned Man, and uses a dash of creative licence to draw upon this city’s forgotten history to generate an array of charming suspects and a world of grit and excitement.

About the Artists

This development is led by Geelong producer-and-actress, Libby Brockman, in collaboration with award-winning writer Fleur Murphy, seasoned director Rachel Baring, and local Geelong actors.

Having been awarded a Creative Engine Jump Start grant in 2021 to begin the project’s initial phase of research, Libby and the Roaring team have since welcomed two passionate and curious interns, Molly England and Alysha Jane. The team researched many exciting characters throughout the Jump Start grant phase and spent time in the beautiful Geelong Arts Centre studios lifting the Roaring characters off the page.

The Roaring team cannot wait to continue writing this new work throughout 2022, and are so appreciative of Creative Engine and other regional grants allowing to pay creatives for their time and giving them time to make something thoughtful and intricate.
