Salome Redux

Ignition | Creative Engine Grant Recipient 2022

Created by four female interdisciplinary artists; Peta Coy, Tina Mitchell, Shura Baryshnikov & Helen Yee through as part of SITI Company’s residency for new works in New York 2016, Salome Redux is a hybrid dance theatre piece with live music and live streaming technology, based on the infamous character Salome.

Set in the wrestling ring, WWE style, it is an exploration of internalized misogyny in contemporary society. How women explore, repress, and destroy themselves and each other in their quest for authentic self-expression.

It is a sport. A sport in which all female-presenting people are playing a role, whether they want to or not. We often explore misogyny through literature and media within the frame of patriarchy, but what if we were to explore women’s sexuality, self-worth, and internalized misogyny through the mind's eye of the women, their bodies and how they move them?

This work aims to bring sport and art together in the same vein as the gladiators and unpack the blurred lines of violence and entertainment facing those living as women. Stadium style. When will we stop fighting each other?

The next phase of development for Salome Redux will see the project expand to incorporate the digital sphere, and to involve more diverse collaborators/performers and the new addition of multimedia/live streaming and work with local MMA experts, bringing together local and international artists to build the infrastructure of a large-scale performance event, accessible to all via in-person live performance and livestream.
